My Top 10 Back To School Tips

Hey guys! so we're almost in the middle of September and many of you are starting school or are already back at school... so I thought this would be the perfect time to put out this post! now when I say school that also includes Sixth Form (college) and University. These are my...

...or you can just call them my top 10 back to school tips (sounds a lot less dramatic.)

1. Adjust your sleeping pattern ASAP!

If you're anything like me your sleeping pattern is probably waaaaay out of wack right and that's fine because it's still summer and you probably won't wake up till 12 o'clock in the afternoon anyway. But as soon as you get back to Uni... school... whatever and those 9 o'clock classes hit you, you don't want to be looking like the walking dead... Ew. Nobody needs that. So I suggest regulating your sleeping pattern as soon as possible. Set an alarm that alerts you to start getting ready for bed and another to wake up, if you have to. Getting yourself in to a routine like this now will be a lot easier on your body by the time school starts.

2. Get your clothes on fleek!

It's the first week back and you have to look BOOM!! So do yourself a favour and prep your outfits in advance, that way you won't be late for your classes and you'll still look cute. Here's a tip for staying cute for the whole academic year: set a little uniform for your self and keep it on rotation. Yes I mean clothes specifically for school... that way you won't have to do so much fussing in the morning and if you do an art / creative course like me you won't ruin all your favourite clothes and when you do decide to wear a piece outside of your "uniform" you'll look extra fabulous!
If your school already has a set uniform, then make sure you have the following key items on fleek;
1. Your shoes!
2. Your bag!
3. Your hair...
although your hair isn't really an outfit choice it does make everything sit well together.

3. Read Ahead!

This may sound like a super nerdy thing to suggest but, if you can study the curriculum ahead of your start date then you should! Being ahead of your class is such a good thing. It means that you can do a lot more chilling later on when all your friends are probably bugging out about deadlines and work. It also means you'll be more aware about what's going on in your classes.

4. Take advantage of student benefits!

There are all kinds of student benefits out there! events, offer, free gifts... the lot! you're not going to be a student forever so definitely make sure you take advantage of this! NUS cards are great for shopping at your favorite brands and they do great discounts so make sure you sign up. Also what I often do (which you may or may not find sad) is ask the cashier if student discount is on offer before my purchase. Remember guys; every penny counts especially when you're a student.

5. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!

Do all your work on time! I can not stress how important this is! It took me a while to get the hang of it because, I am probably the biggest procrastinator this world has ever seen but seriously. This. Is. Key. The sooner you get it done the less work you'll have to do later and it's out of the way so it won't even be an issue later. That way you'll have more free time to turn up, watch Netflix, read your Bible, talk to Bae or do whatever you like doing. Plus, if you do leave it till later it just becomes a snow ball effect till you have an unbearable amount of work to do, which may eventually cause you to fail (especially in the case of University students) and who needs that when you're already paying £9000 a year. So my suggestion is to do it as soon as it's assigned.

6. Pray and be true to yourself!

Oh my goodness! your spirituality will make or break you especially in uni. It's a new environment, you're away from home, you're living with strangers and you're paying bills! Argh! This is all too much! It can really be a lonely and trying time, so I suggest keeping prayer in the forefront of everything. It's also a time when you get to know / gain a better understanding of yourself and I've seen a lot of people get lost in the process.

7. Make friends

Networking is so important! Not only with people in your field (which is also very important) but others too. If (God forbid) you fail everything, all is not lost as long as you have some good connections. Just remember it really is Who you know not What you know. This is a especially good to remember for those going into a creative field.

8. Visit other Unis!

If you're in University make sure you visit other unis! Go and visit your friends and just have fun with them at their uni events, vice versa. This is a great way to meet new people and again N E T W O R K ! ! !

9. Plan and Budget!

The worst thing that can probably happen to you whilst your at school is running out of money! :'( You're already under enough stress as it is with work and deadlines so make sure you plan and budget your life well. This will save you a whole lot of stress and time in the long run.

10. Enjoy it!

Above all, make sure you enjoy your school experience as much as you can! it isn't going to last forever, so love it whilst it's here!

I hope this was helpful! Feel free to ask me any questions in the comments sections and don't forget to;

Black Lives Matter

This week was meant to be a style guide post but with all that's going on right now in the world especially in America, I can't ignore it. The footage I've seen this week of human being is being treated worse than animals all because of their race sickens me to the pit of my stomach.

Although I live in England I think it is important to aknowledge the struggle that these people are facing right now. Where ever we live these people are our people, they are our brothers and sisters and we are all part of the same race… The human race. This struggle is our struggle and although all lives matter, yes, right now it is evident that we need to focus on black lives.

It is painful to see in 2016 that we are facing the same struggle since the time of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and people from centuries before them. Lynching and police brutality is not a thing of the past. Racism, however we might like to think, it is not a thing of the past. All of this is happening right now, in this day and age, 2016 and something needs to be done about it.

Behind all the horrific videos of police brutality and other inhumane acts that we do see, there are many scenarios of discrimination being inflicted that we don't see; some of which I'm sure are far worse and it's only continuing to escalate. Since 2015, 443 black people have been killed by police. 103 of these people were completely unarmed. In the space of five days since July 2nd till July 6th of this year four black men have been murdered by police. That's almost one person being murdered every day, all of them Fathers.

#BlackLivesMatter, they really do, yet right now that doesn't seem to be the case. This needs to be more than a hashtag! Something must change. But we mustn't forget that in times like these, prayer is key. This is a predicament that is bigger than us but not bigger than God. Pray for the world.

These are some of the names of people that have been killed by police so far, this summer alone;

Jessica Williams- Unarmed killed by Gunshot
Michael Wilson Jr- Unarmed killed by Gunshot
Vernell Bing Jr- Unarmed killed by Gunshot
Doll Pierre-Louis- Unarmed killed by Gunshot
Devonte Gates- Unarmed killed by Gunshot
Ollie Brooks- Unarmed killed by Gunshot
Antwun Shumpert- Unarmed killed by Gunshot
Clarence Howard- Unarmed killed by Gunshot
Delrawn Small- Unarmed killed by Gunshot
(According to my calculations that's approximately one unarmed black person murdered every week since May)
Today I marched for the rights of all black people and in respect of the ones we have lost. Other marches will continue to take place across the world for the same reason. If you are in the London area and would like to be part of the next march, please see below for details. Also if you would like to see videos from today's march, feel free to add me on snapchat: Ajobi (QR Code below) and/or watch out for next weeks post on my YouTube where you'll be able to view it there as well. A day in the life of a Central Saint Martins student

Other than being renounced for it's outstanding reputation as the world best fashion school there is more to Central Saint Martins than it's reputation.

Over the past year of studying here, I have found it to be an enjoyable yet challenging experience. Like every other institution it has it's highs and lows and despite it's high rating it is definitely not the place for everyone going in to the fashion industry and it won't guarantee you success in your future career (which is a lie that a lot of people trick themselves into thinking is true.) I too had that unfortunate prescription before I started. "If I don't make it in to CSM I won't be as great a success in the fashion industry". I know of many people that have this perception yet thousands of people graduate from here  every year and still only a handful are successful enough for you to hear about.

Although I have learnt a lot so far from my university such as how to improve my pace and different methods of working, I really feel that it depends on the individual... How you work and how determined you are to make it. It could be argued that the success rate of Central Saint Martins is down to their process of elimination during their interview/portfolio review stage. They only select the best which means the individuals chosen (such as myself) already have the drive and the skills to succeed with out having to be taught much or anything at all (this is something I have observed in my time here).

Despite the negative factors, University of the Arts London is a great place to be . It is especially good for networking and because of it's outstanding reputation more opportunities are given to it's students than other university's may be able to offer. UAL campuses are located in London- one of the worlds fashion capitals; which also makes it easier to indulge yourself in all things fashion.

If you are looking to apply to any of the UAL colleges in particular Central Saint Martins here are 5 tips which I fell are most important;

1. Be open minded

2. Be prepared to work ALL hours of the day, everyday (especially to meet those pesky regular deadlines)

3. Do not procrastinate (it really does have a snowball effect)

4. Network with your peers as much as possible

5. Enjoy yourself !!! After all it is your money...

Last minute Mother's Day ideas

Happy Mother's Day all ! As you guys should already know today is Mother's Day in the UK. Whether your mum is here with you or not you can still appreciate the life of a great Woman. For those of you who have nothing planned for today then thank goodness you're reading this post. Ajobi's got some great ideas for you that are also very quick and easy.

1. Pamper her
If she's always cooking for you, cleaning up after you and comforting you when you haven't had the best of days then why not return the favor? Pamper her and keep her off her feet. Make your mum a bit of breakfast in bed or if it's too late for that how about taking her out to a nice evening dinner in the city.

2. Make her something
Anyone can buy chocolates and a teddy straight off the shelf at the supermarket and we often tend to fall into buying the same gifts every single year. But why not be creative and make something out of love that you know she'll appreciate. If not a hand made gift, why not take it old school and make a card out of pipe cleaners and glitter. As tacky as it sounds she might just like it and it would be a cool activity to do with your younger siblings, if you have any.
And most importantly

3. Spend time with her
It may sound like the obvious thing to do and also such a small thing to do but sometimes we don't actually spend enough time just chilling with ours mother, due to many different factors some more unavoidable than others. But today would the perfect day switch off your phone, fluff up some pillows and have a lazy day in bed with her. Show her you love her just by spending time with her and listening to her. Plus it's free.

In this post I really want to make a personal appeal to my own mother, in the hope that she might read this. I love you and care about you very much although, it may not show sometimes, I hope that it is still evident to you. You are an amazing friend and an even better mother. May God bless you and continue to make your life flourish as you blossom both in beauty and in age. Happy Mother's Day.
God bless.

How I Spent My Valentines Night: Basketmouth Uncensored

This Valentines I attended the GT bank Basketmouth uncensored event at the HMV Apollo in London. It was absolutely amped and I was so excited to be attending! The event is a comedy variety show put on every year by Basketmouth and his team. However, this year was the biggest so far, with 1500 free tickets going out to students studying within the UK. I was lucky to get a hold of one of these tickets myself... thanks guys. The event was hosted by the main man himself and featured musical performances from the likes of  Patoranking, Olamide and Star Boy Wizzy aka Wizkid who ended the show with his new single 'Ojuelegba'. The comedians of the show were all very funny but admittedly I found it hard to understand the Pidgin English used in most of the performances however, it was still an enjoyable evening. Other than Basketmouth my favorite comedians of the night were definitely, with out question, Salvador from Uganda and Aje Baba from Nigeria. They were so hilarious, had me in stitches with every joke (maybe because I could understand them better lol). Although I was quite far from the stage I was still  able to enjoy the show and was most definitely turning up to the sound of my bae... Wizkid.  I must say Patoranking didn't really shut down like I thought he would in his performance. It was actually quite uncomfortable to watch but I guess he's still new in the game. Olamide did his thing, performing his headliners 'Shoki Remix' and 'Turn Up'. Wizkid performance was of course my favorite. As many people would agree, he completely shut down, blew up and dismantled the stage with his performance... like he always does! *sigh* bae... Whilst I was there I actually bumped in to another artist I admire. Guess who it was... Moelogo! For those of you who don't know, Moelogo is an up and coming UK Afrobeats artist. He's doing big things already with one of his most well know track featuring the UK Grime artist Giggs. Luckily he was kind enough to stop and take a photo with both my friend and I which is posted on my personal instagram page @ajobi_. A truly humble character.

The event is touring 5 different venues across the UK and will be in Nottingham on the 20th of  February 2015 and Glasgow on the 21st and 22nd so don't miss out!

God Bless.

Martin Luther King Day

1929-1968

Monday of this week (today) is a day recognised as Martin Luther King day, a great day set aside to celebrate the life of a great man, just days before his official birthday (January 15th). This has been a day  nationally celebrated  across the U.S.A. on the 3rd Monday of every January since 1986 but why not celebrate it internationally, like here in England, to recognise the good deeds of a remarkable man and the outstanding acts carried out to make a better society for all. Martin Luther King is one of history's greatest inspirations not just for the black community but to all. During his life he worked to fight for the rights of African Americans yet still to unite all. He did this without violence but with demonstrations, peaceful protesting and the power of Speech. Perhaps this is an example that should still be followed. Isn't it greater to love our enmies than to fight against them? As my mum would say 'kill them with a smile Abi' and 'love your neighbour regardless of what they do'.  I mean sometimes reasonable force is necessary but doesn't it make us just as bad as each other if we fight fire with fire. One of his greatest quotes that sticks in my mind is; "Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity" - Martin Luther King. This quote to me is meaningful because the words demonstrate the reason behind most; if not all of today's killings and wars, sheer selfishness, greed and ignorance. Let's hope that today is a day of reflection and thought to recognise a great man and to look over the past as well as present events. I also hope that today is a day to reflect on the recent lives lost for the exact same reason MLK fought for in his lifetime.

God bless.
